What is progressive resistance training?

The National Institute of Health defines progressive resistance training (PRT) as “a type of exercise where participants exercise their muscles against some type of resistance that is progressively increased as their strength improves.” Our bodies adapt to our exercise routines, which is why we need to switch things up and challenge ourselves to continue to see muscle growth and improved levels of fitness.

Successful resistance training has many different components, including but not limited to, the following:

Your fitness program

This consists of different types of training, such as aerobic, flexibility, strength training, and exercises to improve balance

Weight

being used– different weights or other types of resistance

Different kinds of exercises

Specific movements can be used to strengthen a particular muscle or group of muscles

Repetitions

This refers to the number of times you continuously repeat each exercise in a set

Variety

It’s important to change up your workout routine and introduce new exercises to challenge your muscles and force them to adapt and strengthen

Rest

Make sure to rest between sets! Rest periods vary depending on the intensity of exercise being undertaken

Recovery

Your muscles need time to repair and adapt after a workout. Resting the muscle group for up to 48 hours before working them again is a good way to prevent injury

There are also tons of physical and mental health benefits that can be achieved through resistance training! Some of the most common include:

  • More energy
  • Improved muscle strength and tone
  • Weight management
  • Prevention of heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, depression, or other illnesses
  • Better balance and mobility
  • Improved posture
  • Lower risk of injury
  • Better sleep

If you have been injured and you’re noticing that it’s harder for you to perform certain exercises or maintain muscle strength, progressive resistance training may benefit you. One of our skilled physical therapists in Arvada can help you on your journey to achieving your goals.

What to expect during your resistance training

There are several ways your Arvada Physical Therapy Professional physical therapist may choose to work with you during your progressive resistance training. They may choose to use medicine balls, free weights, resistance bands, weight machines, suspension equipment, and of course, your own body weight will be utilized as well.

At your first appointment, your physical therapist will conduct a comprehensive examination that will determine the best course of treatment for your specific needs. Afterwards, they will design your individualized treatment plan. If they think that progressive resistance training will benefit you, they will incorporate time for you to spend in the gym during your in-office appointments.
